2. Etch vs. stain
These two failure modes look similar but require entirely different fixes, so diagnosing correctly matters.
- Etching is a chemical burn — acid reacts with the stone's surface and dissolves the polish, leaving a dull, sometimes slightly rough mark. It's a physical loss of surface, not a discoloration, and is fixed by polishing or honing.
- Staining is a substance absorbed into the stone's pores — oil, cosmetics, tannin from wine or coffee — that discolors it without altering the surface texture. Stains are drawn back out with a poultice, not polished away.
A fast field test: run a fingertip over the mark. If it feels dull or slightly rough compared to the surrounding polish, it's an etch. If the surface still feels smooth and glossy but is discolored, it's a stain.
3. Stone-by-stone care guide
- Marble: soft, calcium-based, and the most etch-prone stone in common use. pH-neutral cleaner only, reseal every 6–12 months in high-traffic areas.
- Limestone: chemically similar to marble and just as vulnerable to acid etching. Often used for fireplace surrounds and exterior facades — treat it with the same caution as marble.
- Travertine: a porous form of limestone, often with natural pits filled during fabrication. Stains from oil and wine within minutes if unsealed; seal annually and blot spills immediately.
- Granite: dense, crystalline, and far more chemical-resistant than marble, though not indestructible — avoid ammonia and bleach, which erode sealant. Reseal every 1–2 years.

4. Sealing schedules

5. Poultice repair for stains and etching
A poultice draws an absorbed stain back out of porous stone. Mix an absorbent powder — baking soda or a commercial poultice powder — with water or a mild solvent appropriate to the stain type (oil-based stains typically need a solvent carrier, organic stains often respond to a mild peroxide mix) into a thick paste. Apply generously over the stain, cover with plastic wrap taped at the edges to slow evaporation, and leave for 24–48 hours. As it dries, the paste draws the stain up out of the pores. Rinse and repeat if needed.
Poultices treat stains, not etches. Etch marks require polishing powder for light surface dulling, or professional honing — a mechanical resurfacing process — for deeper damage. Honing removes a thin layer of stone to expose an unetched surface, followed by repolishing to restore sheen; it's a specialist job, not a DIY sanding project, since uneven honing creates permanent low spots.
6. Honed vs. polished finishes
Polished stone has a high-gloss, mirror-like surface from progressive fine grinding; honed stone stops that process earlier for a matte or satin look. Honed finishes are more forgiving day to day — they hide etching, scratches, and water spots far better than polished stone, which is why many designers now spec honed marble for kitchen counters. The tradeoff is that honed surfaces are slightly more open and porous, so they typically need sealing somewhat more often than a fully polished equivalent of the same stone.
7. Snowmelt salt and grit in Aspen

Hudson Valley farmhouses and estates frequently pair exterior bluestone — patios, steps, foundation caps — with interior marble mantels and thresholds original to 18th- and 19th-century construction. Exterior bluestone needs annual sealing to resist freeze-thaw spalling from the region's winter cycling, and moss or lichen growth should be removed with a soft brush rather than a pressure washer, which erodes soft, historic stone faster than it cleans it.
